Twyford, Wargrave and the lanes off the A4

A trunk road across the top, a river down the side, and a dozen villages in between. RG10 is a district of small roads.

The A4 through Hare Hatch and Knowl Hill carries fast traffic between hedgerows and drops the debris that punctures tyres in the gutter line. Twyford is level crossing and station car park — barriers down, engines running, and a queue that has to move whether your tyre is up or not. Wargrave runs steeply down to the water with parking on a slope, which is a consideration before the jack comes out. Shurlock Row, Waltham St Lawrence and Hurst are proper single-track with flint in the verges, and flint cuts sidewalls rather than punctures treads.

Parked on a slope facing the river: leave it in gear with the handbrake hard on. We will bring chocks and pick the flat spot.
