Do I sit in the car or get out?
Out and the far side of the barrier on the A30 dual or an M25 slip, well back from the traffic. On a quiet GU25 lane, staying with the vehicle is normally the sensible call. Say which of the two you are on, because it changes how the van comes in.
How long will it take at 2am?
That hangs on where you are relative to the van, not on what the clock reads. Give the landmark and you get an honest estimate instead of a number chosen to sound reassuring.
I have a space-saver in the boot.
If it goes on safely and it is legal to run, use it. If it will not, leave it. A skinny spare that lets go a couple of miles later has bought you nothing at all.
